Global Commodities UK, which produces an eco-friendly diesel using vegetable oil, said an environmental hitch had scuppered plans to move into the former canning factory at the Riverside Business Park.

It is now looking instead to switch its attention to potential sites at King's Lynn or Spalding in Lincolnshire.

In a statement, managing director Dennis Thouless, of the firm based at Shipdham, near Dereham, said: "An unresolved environmental issue was identified, which meant it may have proved difficult to use the port facility. We were extremely keen to have taken on this site and this was underlined by the fact we had been in discussions for 18 months. Other options have become available, which we are currently investigating."
