Plans for a new biofuel plant in Lowestoft could offer some relief to the town in the wake of Shell's announcement of 200 redundancies.
Dennis Thouless, the managing director of Global Commodities in Shipdham near Dereham, is already overseeing production of 10m litres of bio-fuel a year – most of it being used by hauliers and transport firms.
Mr Thouless said his company's expansion plans for Lowestoft were likely to create 130 jobs and that people being made redundant by Shell had the skills he was looking for.
Shell announced last week that it was planning to close its Lowestoft HQ to save £800m from its Europeans operations. The company said workers would be offered relocation or voluntary redundancy.
But Mr Thouless said: "We are as far advanced in terms of technology as the Europeans, but the difference is that there is not a level playing field – and that's what we want, the same level of duty as elsewhere.
